Gluten Free Pancake Recipe - dairy free egg free vegan soy free

Gluten Free Pancake Recipe – Dairy Free, Egg Free, Nut Free, Vegan

Years. It took years to come up with a gluten free pancake recipe, which was also allergy free, that my whole family was happy with. (OK, my husband doesn’t like pancakes so he doesn’t count.) I tried all sorts of gluten free recipes over the years with a million different ingredients and had a few that I used, but was never thrilled. And then my younger son was diagnosed with dairy, egg and nut allergies, at different times, so those recipes had to be further modified to be allergy free. As you can imagine, there was lots of experimentation and...

Gluten Free Bread - FearlessFoodAllergyMom.com

My Favorite Gluten Free Bread Recipe- Egg Free and Dairy Free Too!

Is there anything better than fresh baked bread? Before going gluten-free, I would have never attempted to bake a loaf of bread. Then again, I was in my early 20’s and more concerned about hanging out with friends and starting a career – I wasn’t doing much cooking in general, never mind making anything from scratch. But then came the realization that gluten was having really bad effects on me. Back then, there were almost no gluten free products on the market. No one even knew what “gluten” was! I hit the bookstores and discovered Bette Hagman’s gluten free cookbook....

Gluten Free Banana Bread Recipe - fearlessfoodallergymom.com

Easy Gluten Free Banana Bread Recipe

It’s so rare that I catch a banana at the perfect time of ripeness for eating. That perfect time lasts for what, half an hour? That’s why I usually use them for banana bread, quick breakfast balls, or smoothies. This gluten free banana bread recipe uses minimal ingredients but delivers big taste! It calls for only rice flour and potato starch, and can be made egg free. Additionally, it is dairy free, nut free and soy free. I usually use one cup of brown rice flour and one cup of white rice flour, but you can use either one or...

Fearless Food Allergy Mom - kettle corn recipe

Kettle Corn Recipe

You shouldn’t be sad at the county fair, right? Well, going to the fair sometimes makes me a little sad because I can’t have those giant bags of kettle corn they sell. You can smell the sweet and salty goodness from so far away, and they tempt you with tantalizing free samples! I try to avoid them because they are almost always made with soybean oil, and so are the ones sold at the grocery store. But here’s a great recipe that tastes just like the stuff they sell at the fair, and you can have it fresh whenever you like!...

Royal Icing Recipe – Egg Free and Dairy Free

Here’s a vegan royal icing recipe which is dairy free, egg free, gluten free, soy free and vegan! We use it to decorate cookies. I separate the icing into a few bowls and color the batches with natural food coloring. Then I put some into the corner of a snack size zip top plastic bag (that’s what’s pictured), and snip off a tiny part of the corner. My kids squeeze those bags to decorate our allergy free cookies. I personally don’t like artificial food flavorings, but they work in this recipe if you like them. Using real vanilla extract will make...

FearlessFoodAllergyMom.com - gluten free Cheerios

Gluten Free Cheerios Coming Soon!

My kids eat Cheerios every day, and every day I miss eating them! I’m gluten sensitive, so I haven’t had Cheerios in a very long time. Gluten free oats are available in stores, and there other brands of O-shaped cereal, but I have missed Cheerios. So I was very excited to hear that Big G Cereals will roll out gluten free Cheerios starting in July 2015! UPDATE: Check out my review of the new gluten-free Cheerios, which includes a summary of all of the controversy, including whether or not they are truly gluten free!  The five flavors going gluten free...

Gluten Free Meatballs Without Eggs or Milk

There are only two meatballs and no pasta in the photo because my family devoured everything before I remembered to take a picture! Making meatballs without eggs or milk is actually very easy, and you won’t feel like you’re missing anything. Breadcrumbs are replaced with crushed cornflakes. Just put approximately 1 cup cornflakes in a plastic zip top bag, seal it, and crush them up with a rolling pin. Make sure you have at least a half cup...

Fearless Food Allergy Mom review of Pascha soy free chocolate

Review of Pascha Soy Free Chocolate – Dairy Free, Top 8 Allergen Free

I’m in the middle of writing a post on soy free chocolate, but just tried a new brand and had to write about it immediately! I’ve heard about Pascha Organic Dark Chocolate bars but never saw them at the store until today. Pascha chocolate bars are vegan and free from peanuts, nuts, dairy, soy, eggs, wheat and gluten. The products also do not contain any GMOs, and are Fair Trade Certified to boot! The bar I tried is called 55% Cacao with Goldenberries. Pascha only makes dark chocolates which range from 55% to 85% chocolate cacao. A higher percentage of cacao...

Food Diary - Fearless Food Allergy Mom

Food Diary For Allergies and Symptoms – Free Download!

A food diary is one of the best tools to figure out what foods you or your child are allergic or sensitive to. Your allergist can perform blood tests and skin prick tests that will help you determine any allergies. But, as the doctors will tell you, those tests are not 100 percent accurate. You may test positive for an allergy to peanuts, but maybe you’ve been eating them without noticing any reaction. Or, your child’s test may be negative for a milk allergy, but you suspect she wheezes when she has dairy products. That eczema that won’t go away even...

Peanut Allergy? FDA Warns to Avoid Cumin!

The Food and Drug Administration has recently warned that products containing the spice cumin may contain peanut protein which is not disclosed on product labels. If you have a peanut allergy, the FDA says you should avoid not only the products which were recalled, but “take precautions” with any product that contains cumin. This is because their investigation continues and they are continuing to identify companies that have received shipments of the contaminated spice. The FDA advises that products made before 2014 are unlikely to contain the affected cumin. The recall includes spice mixes, bean soups and meat products with marinades...

Fearless Food Allergy Mom - Allergy Free Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars

Allergy Free Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars

I love this recipe because it doesn’t involve a lot of flours or too many steps. My boys love it because it tastes great! Like a chocolate chip cookie in bar form. It’s easy because you don’t have to scoop out the dough to make cookies – just plop into a pan, flatten it out and bake. Although some of my recipes call for a few different gluten free flours to get the right taste and texture, this recipe uses only brown rice flour but it works perfectly. These allergy free chocolate chip cookie bars are gluten free, dairy free,...

It’s Taco Tuesday! Gluten Free Taco Seasoning Recipe

Those little packets of taco seasoning mix that you find at the grocery store often contain gluten, soy, artificial ingredients and fillers. Here’s a gluten free taco seasoning recipe that is also top 8 allergy free and free of artificial stuff. Making taco seasoning from scratch ensures that your spice mix is free of what you’re allergic to, and is less expensive than buying individual packets. Fearless Food Allergy Mom - Valentines Day and Food Allergies

Valentines Day and Food Allergies

Am I the only one who hates that so many holidays revolve around food? Thanksgiving is one thing, but Valentine’s Day? All those chocolates, candies and chocolate-covered everythings annoy me because I can’t have any of it. Diamonds and precious stones are much better at demonstrating affection, don’t you think? (My son thinks Lego gifts show love.) Aside from that, Valentine’s Day is tough for little kids with food allergies. So many kids exchange candy and chocolates with their valentines, and those individual candy packages don’t have ingredients listed. Thus, children with allergies can’t have the treats their friends give...

Gluten Free Biscuit Recipe – Dairy Free, Egg Free, Nut Free, Seed Free

Need an easy bread recipe that doesn’t involve yeast, a bread maker or special equipment, but still tastes delicious? This is it! This gluten free biscuit recipe is another one I’ve been tinkering with for years. I have modified the flours and starches to get just the right consistency and taste, and changed it a number of times to make it dairy and egg free. Now I think it’s perfect! This is what I whip up when I need some type of bread but don’t have the time or inclination to bake a loaf of my favorite sandwich bread in...

Six Tips for Going to Birthday Parties With Food Allergies

Birthday parties can be so tough for little kids with food allergies, and very stressful for their parents. With pizza, ice cream and cake as standard party fare, going to kids’ birthday parties with food allergies can be difficult. Whether the food allergic child is the birthday kid or a guest, each scenario has its own challenges. (I’ll be posting soon about hosting a party for your own child with food allergies!) For allergic kids attending parties, here are some things that work for us: 1. Bring food that is either special, or similar to what’s being served. Bringing your own food is...

Fearless Food Allergy Mom - Recipe for Powdered Egg Replacer

Recipe for Powdered Egg Substitute – Vegan, Dairy Free, Gluten Free, Flaxseed Free

Replacing eggs in baking can be done in a number of ways. A lot of egg-free recipes call for “flax eggs,” which are made with flax seed. I’m sensitive to flax seed so I can’t use those. Fruit puree (applesauce or prune puree) can be used to replace eggs in certain types of recipes, like sweet quick breads or brownies. But fruit puree can’t be used to replace eggs in everything because you can taste the flavor of the fruit in the finished product, and the fruit does not replace the leavening action of the eggs. Powdered egg substitute (or “egg...

Non-Dairy and Dairy Free Labels - Fearless Food Allergy Mom

Non-Dairy and Dairy Free Labels: May Contain Milk Protein!

When shopping for dairy-free products, are you confused by the non-dairy and dairy free labels on the product packaging?  You should be. Beware that the terms “non-dairy” and “dairy free” do NOT necessarily mean that the product is free of milk protein! Confusing, I know. The reason is that the FDA’s definition of the term “non-dairy” allows for the use of casein (a milk protein) in the product with that label.  It may not contain actual milk as an ingredient but, for some ridiculous reason, milk protein is allowed.  I have found that many products labeled non-dairy (a term often...

I Know How to Use a Stethoscope, or, Having a Child With Asthma or Reactive Airway Disease

When a child has breathing issues, it’s scary. Unfortunately, my children have been to the emergency room and admitted to the hospital more times than I care to think about. Thankfully, they are both doing rather well now. Here are some things I have learned along the way about having a child with asthma or reactive airway disease. (Remember that I am not a doctor or nurse so, please, always consult with your child’s pediatrician regarding your child!) ♦  Asthma or Reactive Airway Disease? Breathing problems in children under 6 are usually not diagnosed as “asthma” because they cannot accurately gauge...

How to Prepare for a Storm When You Have Food Allergies and Asthma

“French toast alert!”  That cracks me up.  It refers to the panic before snowstorms where everyone rushes to the store to buy bread, milk and eggs. With our food allergies, my storm shopping list is a little different! Also, having a child with asthma has its own concerns in the face of a nasty Nor’Easter. A blizzard is heading this way tonight and people are practically killing each other in the parking lots and aisles of grocery and home improvement stores to get prepared.  I shopped in case we get snowed in or lose power for a long time, especially...
